When we dig into our family history, we sometimes stumble upon stories shaped not just by individual choices, but by the sweeping hand of history itself. Today is a special day to remember our ancestors! If you have ancestors in the American Revolution, this is the year to create your story. I have multiple Revolutionary War soldiers. Each one deserves their story to be told. What about yours? If not you,
who?
I remember the first time I realized that my ninth great-grandfather's journey across the Atlantic wasn't just a personal adventure—it was part of a much larger story set in motion by historical events. Those moments remind me just how intertwined our ancestors' lives are with the world around them.
How History Shapes Family Stories
Major events like wars, epidemics, or economic upheaval often left deep marks on our ancestors’ lives. For example, the
Mayflower voyage, which so many of us trace our roots to, was driven by religious conflict and a search for new opportunities.
Events of the Civil War embroiled my relative in a stagecoach robbery in California in support of the Confederacy. Later, events like the Great Depression or westward expansion prompted entire families to uproot, adapt, and start anew. These aren’t just dates on a timeline—they’re turning points that shaped who we are
today.
- Wars and Military Service: Did your ancestor serve in the military? Wars frequently changed family structures and even the spelling of surnames.
- Pandemics: The 1918 influenza pandemic, for instance, altered family trees in ways that are still felt generations later. I incorporated this pandemic into my most recent booklet: Teenage Wildcatters in Wyoming’s Oil Fields—it’s a fascinating slice of American history involving my father. The PDF is available on my website for a small fee. If you'd like a printed booklet, reach out to me. For a few dollars more, a limited number of them are available now.
- Migrations: Economic booms often drew families
hundreds of miles from their original homes. Or maybe a depression forced them to leave for unknown territories.
Bringing History into Your Family Research
If you find a gap, a sudden move, or a change in your family’s story, try asking: What was happening in the world at that time? Was there a local event, a new law, or a global crisis that could have influenced your ancestor’s choices? Sometimes, understanding the context is the key to unlocking a mystery in your
tree.
For those who want to go deeper, I recommend reading Puritans, Plagues, and Promises. This book explores how historical forces shaped three families’ journeys from England to America—and you might just see echoes of your own ancestors’ experiences within its pages. Find your copy in the shop.
