Why we should travel
On a recent Road Scholar trip in Hamburg, Germany, the group at our table discussed our German family history over lunch. As the conversation progressed, Bill Cole told a story from his book, Puritans, Plagues, and Promises about his English ancestry which included Mayflower’s voyage.
One Road Scholar asked Bill, “Who is your Mayflower ancestor?” He replied, “Stephen Hopkins.” She said, “So am I.” Bill asked, “From which child?” She said, “His daughter, Constance.” He said, “So am I.” Another Road Scholar at the next table overheard the conversation and said, “I am also descended from them!”
Out of 22 participants on a tour in Hamburg Germany, many were on the trip to look for more information on their German ancestors plus study its culture and history. For three of us, the unexpected discovery of two shared Mayflower passengers was beyond the price of the
trip. It was way beyond any of our imagined tour benefits!
That's another good reason why we should travel in our genealogy quests. As the Passionate Genealogist often says, "Good stuff happens when you show up!"
